A new single from Cape Canaveral, 'In The City I Can't Sing', arrives on 22 July 2022, signalling the release of their second full-length album in August. Despite clocking in at nearly 20 minutes, this track only gives a hint of the fascinating ground covered by their new album: The Observatory.
On 'In The City I Can't Sing', you're hearing a real woodblock instrument being struck, not a sample being triggered. Every song and every sound on The Observatory has been fully created and crafted by Cape Canaveral from scratch - no MIDI, no hardware or soft synths, no presets, no loops, no sequencing. We think you'll be as thrilled as we are when you hear how this approach is realised on the album.
Cape Canaveral aka Kevin Sorsby was a key player in the creation of Machine Records in Cardiff more than 20 years ago. Until recent years, however, his own releases on the label have been few and far between. After providing three beautifully formed tracks on our first two Machine compilations in 2003/2004, it was twelve years until his first solo release: an atmospheric three track EP called 'We Love Like You', which appeared in 2016.
His debut album 'Inconvenience Me' followed, a captivating sonic manifesto, by turns meditative, ecstatic, pugilistic, and slightly terrifying! 'Inconvenience Me' journeyed into new textures and tones with few obvious reference points. Meanwhile Kevin's newer solo project, Starlings, appeared in 2021 with a raw, noise-driven aesthetic that, at least superficially, couldn't be more different to 'In The City I Can't Sing'. The Observatory introduces a brand new chapter in Cape Canaveral's sound.
